Elon Musk, who bought Twitter the other day, is already in trouble with the European Union. EU internal market commissioner Thierry Breton threatened Elon Musk that Twitter could be sanctioned if he loosened the rules.
Elon Musk, who recently bought a large share of Twitter, took action to buy all the shares of the platform immediately after this move. Musk, who offered $ 44 billion to own all of the shares, achieved his goal the other day and became the new owner of Twitter by accepting his offer.
A while ago, news that Elon Musk had to sell some of Tesla’s shares in order to buy Twitter was on the agenda. After buying Twitter, this news caused a big drop in Tesla shares. Of course, this did not change the fact that Elon Musk achieved his goal. Musk attributed the reason why he insisted on taking Twitter despite the decline in his company’s shares, to ‘freedom of expression’, but today a serious warning came from the European Union on this issue.
“We will penalize Twitter if it goes ‘unsupervised’ any longer than necessary”
Elon Musk has announced that he wants to make Twitter a platform where users can express themselves freely. However, this statement Musk caused concerns in the European Union. In a statement made today, the EU stated that they will take necessary measures if the Twitter rules are stretched too much. Thierry Breton, one of the EU’s commissioners in charge of the internal market, almost threatened Musk in his speech to The Financial Times.
Breton said in his speech, “Elon, there are rules. You’re welcome, these are our rules. It is not your rules that will apply here ” and underlined that Elon Musk should not introduce new rules according to his mind.
Continuing his rhetoric in the other part of his statements, Breton said; He stated that the sanctions will increase exponentially in case of non-compliance with EU laws on issues such as hate speech, transparency and moderation. He added that Elon Musk’s loosening of the rules could lead to a 6% cut in annual revenues from the EU and even a ban on Twitter’s activities in Europe.
No one knows what Elon Musk’s response to Breton will be. However, it is clear that Musk’s statements are already causing concern. We will wait and see whether Musk will take these words of the European Union into account in the new changes that will come to Twitter in the coming days.
